Why The New Year Doesn’t Need a New You: New Year, Same You
It’s a new year but the new year doesn’t need a new you. Ditch the pressure of “New Year, New
You” so you can learn how to make this year about focusing on better systems and celebrating the
amazing person you already are. We’ve all gotten accustomed to the idea of a new year
bringing forth a new you. This encourages big ideas, new goals, and a newer and better version
of yourself but that can lead to problems. Unfortunately, for many people this leads to disappointment and a sense of failure from not achieving the vision of this new version of you. A new you won’t just emerge because it’s a new year. Let’s talk about why the new year doesn’t need a new you.
The truth is that you don’t need a new you. What if the current version of you is enough and
instead of new goals, you just need better systems? I strongly encourage you to look at your
systems, see what’s working and what isn’t. This will give you clarity around what adjustments
you need to make and where to put your focus. Remember that what you focus on grows so if
your focus is spread too thin, it may be harder to see your progress and what efforts are yielding
the most success. Having new goals won’t necessarily lead to success if you don’t have good
systems in place. What would it feel like to have just a few goals and be able to accomplish
them versus having several goals and only achieving one, two or maybe even none?
Think “ripples make waves” instead of “go big or go home.” Focus on keeping things small and
simple. Ask yourself what’s doable for you because if it’s doable that means it has the potential to be
sustainable and therefore achievable. This will help lead to less overwhelm and an emphasis on
smaller, doable steps that you can keep up with consistently. No goal is achieved without
consistent effort. Progress comes from consistency, not re-invention.
You are not the problem, and a new year isn’t the answer. But if you are the problem, that means you’re also the solution. What you need is to re-evaluate your values so that you ensure your goals align with these core values. The new year needs the same you with better systems, more consistency and a narrower focus. Your goals can remain the same as before, for instance, but with a different and better strategy.
