What If the Problem Isn’t You? 10 Controversial Beliefs That Could Actually Set You Free

If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve been carrying the weight of disappointment after multiple attempts to grow your family, the exhaustion of negative pregnancy tests, or the quiet ache of feeling like you’re “behind” everyone else. What if the problem isn’t you? I’m sharing 10 controversial beliefs that could actually set you free.

One of the hardest parts of the fertility journey is feeling like the problem is you. The feeling that maybe if you just did “more” or “less,” things would be different. That if you were stronger or braver or just more positive, you’d be farther along.

But what if I told you that the problem isn’t you? What if the stories you’ve been telling yourself, the ones that keep you stuck in shame, fear, and overwhelm aren’t actually true?

Here are 10 controversial beliefs I hold as a fertility therapist that might feel uncomfortable at first but could change everything for you.

1. Your worth is not tied to whether or not you become a parent.

This is perhaps the most revolutionary belief of all. Your value, your identity, and your right to joy don’t hinge on a positive test or a baby in your arms. You are worthy just as you are.

2. Feeling angry or resentful is a healthy and necessary part of your journey.

Anger isn’t “bad.” It’s a natural, valid response to loss and unfairness and it deserves space, not judgment. Try not to judge yourself for the undesirable feelings you experience on your fertility journey.

3. It’s okay and even brave to say no to people or treatments that don’t serve your well-being.

You don’t have to follow every piece of advice or undergo every treatment just because someone said so. Your body and mind get to say yes or no. Choose and do what feels right for you. It’s also okay to not know what feels like the next right step for you. There’s bravery in being honest with yourself at every step of the journey.

4. “Relax and it will happen” is harmful advice, not helpful support.

Telling someone to relax when they’re carrying the weight of fertility challenges is dismissive and it only adds to the pressure. If you’re the one telling yourself that, notice if it feels supportive the next time you say it.

5. Your body doesn’t owe you a baby and that’s not a failure.

Our bodies do their best with what they have. When things don’t go as hoped, it’s not a reflection of your worth or effort.

6. You can grieve losses that no one else recognizes without being “dramatic.”

Loss in fertility is often invisible to others, but it’s no less real or valid. Your grief matters even when no one knows or sees it.

7. Being vulnerable about your struggles is a strength, not a weakness.

Sharing your story can be scary, but it’s also one of the most courageous steps toward healing. If you need a safe place to share your story and get meaningful support, start here

8. You don’t have to be “positive” all the time to heal and move forward.

It’s okay to have bad days, to cry, to feel lost. Healing isn’t linear or neat.

9. Therapy is not just for when things get “really bad.” It can be a powerful tool at any stage.

Seeking support early can save you from carrying unnecessary shame and help you build tools that last a lifetime.

10. Healing your relationship with yourself is the most important foundation for any path forward.

Before you can navigate your next steps with clarity and confidence, you need to reconnect to your worth, your body, and your truth.

Why These Beliefs Matter

Changing your mindset is not about “thinking positively” or forcing happiness. It’s about peeling back the layers of shame and unrealistic expectations that keep you trapped.

When you let go of these harmful beliefs, you give yourself permission to feel fully, to set boundaries, and to create space for real healing.

This shift transforms your fertility journey from a battle of “win or lose” into a path of self-discovery and wholeness.
